The initial reviews from multiple sources regarding the new Fantastic Beasts movie are disappointing and The Crimes of Grindelwald feels disconnected from the Harry Potter world. The series no longer feels the same, and this extension does not help in adding something useful to the Harry Potter universe. There are conflicts and confusions.
Did people who grew up with the original Star Wars (episodes 4 to 6) felt the same way when episodes 1 to 3 came out? because newer episodes were flashier and took viewers away from the story. Someone might say that Star Wars prequels were planned because they started with episode 4 so everyone knew it was going to happen. However, George Lucas didn’t call it 4 for the sense of a prequel. It was just to indicate that they were starting at the middle of a story (something of a writing style nowadays, movies always tend to pick up right before the end or at the middle). Later it was established other parts would happen so they went with calling it 4 in the releases. Enough about Star Wars though let’s get back to our topic.
Recent movie of Fantastic Beasts shows Albus Dumbledore as the DADA (Defence Against the Dark Arts) teacher, which to any Harry Potter fan is an eyebrow raise. Because Albus Dumbledore was best known for his role as a transfiguration professor. Minerva McGonagall is also shown in the movie as young adult in 1927. But the problem is she is eight years before her birthday if we believe that she told Umbridge the truth about how long she has been teaching at Hogwarts in Order of the Phoenix.
The movies takes place in a time before Albus Dumbledore was the wise and contained headmaster we knew. He is filled with regret, mistakes and unknown history. Here is where we will learn of the amends and things he did to become the person we saw through Harry in Harry Potter series.
The movie is without a doubt dark. It’s exactly what you would expect if the first book J.K. Rowling wrote would have been about Voldemort’s reign of terror, But a lot worse. Because Grindelwald is in some sense scarier than Voldemort. Overall the story of the movie is quite inconsistent with the Harry Potter world. Lets wait and see if the next part in the series can fix the plot holes in this one.
