The Lion King needs no introduction even for kids born in the 21st Century. It was arguably one of the best animated movies to be created by Disney or anyone for that matter. Even as adults, it holds a special place in our hearts. The movie was every kid’s favorite while growing up and we certainly have watched it over 10 times at least.
Since Disney has been creating live action movies of all its animated titles, the production of The Lion King was inevitable. It was going to be sure hit. Everyone already loved it and Disney was surely going to capitalize on the innate infatuation of human beings with nostalgia. The movie has already crossed 950 million mark on box office and is only expected to grow. This doesn’t necessarily mean the movie is a hit.
We can see the continuous decline in ratings on both IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes. The remake is now at 7.1 on IMDB and 53% on RT which is a serious blow compared to the original’s 8.5 on IMDB and 93% on RT. From this perspective, it seems that the remake has still a tall ladder to climb which seems like an impossible task considering how much time has passed since the release of the movie.
Other than the obvious rating difference between live action and animated film, fans also have mixed feelings about the remake. The reviews say that it failed to capture the emotions as the animated film did. It looked more like a National Geographic documentary more than a film made for kids or the 90’s kids. In other words, they failed to depict the original essence of the movie. The voice for Scar did not do justice to the original film either. It felt cringe worthy at times. Seth Rogan was the best voice actor in this movie.
The movie has its perks, it makes us reminisce, takes us on a journey to childhood and reminds us of the simpler times where films were on Video Tapes. The story was albeit the exact same, but it was a pleasure to see despite things that could have been done better. What do you think of this movie?
